CGDRT Medical Research Officer Elected to AMRC Executive Council

Everyone at the CGD Research Trust was delighted when Dr Susan Walsh, our medical research officer, was nominated by Wellchild and elected by the AMRC charities to join the executive council.

The Association of Medical Research Charities is a well respected umbrella charity providing support and leadership to the medical research charity sector. It has a membership of over 102 charities, which between them account for over £935 million spend on medical and health research. The AMRC has a highly influential voice with other research organisations, government and the general public.

The CGD Research Trust has been a member of the AMRC since 1997 and has witnessed it become an increasingly successful organisation. It has attracted some eminent names from the research and medical worlds. The current chairman of the executive council is Baroness Julia Cumberledge and the vice-chair is Simon Moore, previously of Action Medical Research.

Earlier this year Susan took part in an AMRC All Party Parliamentary Group discussion exploring the use of patient data at the House of Commons, chaired by Lord Turnburg. She says:

‘I feel honoured to be voted on to this board and hope the experience will benefit CGDRT in many ways.’

Susan feels the CGD Research Trust will benefit through bringing the voice of a small charity into a bigger setting and through the opportunity to learn from other charities. It will give us insight into the sector and the policies that will have an impact on us and allow the small charity view to count as an influence on those policies.

Following recent changes to the Associations Memorandum and Articles, eight members of Executive Council are nominated and/or elected by AMRC members. These members may serve up to a renewable period of three years. The council can appoint four co-opted members. Her fellow councillors include:

Members
Jonathan Barrick – CEO – Stroke Association
Aisling Burnand - Executive Director, Policy and Public Affairs - Cancer Research UK
Kieran Breen – Director of Research – Parkinson’s Disease Society
Philip Butcher  – CE) – Muscular Dystrophy Campaign

Susan Walsh – CGD RT

Observers
Simon Wessely (Academy of Medical Sciences)

We congratulate Susan and wish her well in representing the small charity perspective during her term of office.
